The short answer

A water heater that trips the breaker usually has a failed heating element leaking current to earth. A damp or burnt wiring connection, or a faulty thermostat, can also cause it. Switch the heater off and stop resetting the breaker. Element replacement with Urban Chill is from AED 250, part included.

Why does my water heater trip the breaker?

These are the causes we find most often:

  • Failed heating element: scale cracks the element's sheath, and current leaks to earth. This trips the RCD (earth leakage breaker).
  • Water in the wiring: a leak near the element cover or terminal box
  • Burnt or loose terminals: heat cycles loosen connections over time
  • Faulty thermostat: it can fail closed and overheat, or short internally

What can I safely check myself?

Only from the outside, with the power off. Check whether there is water around the heater or its cover, and whether the breaker trips immediately or only after the heater has run for a while. Note what you see and tell the technician. Do not open the cover. The terminals carry mains voltage.

Why does it get worse in winter?

Many Dubai households switch the heater off in summer, when tank water already runs warm. Switching it back on in October puts a scaled element back to full work, and that is when weak elements fail. An annual service before winter catches them first.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to keep resetting the breaker?

No. The breaker trips to protect you from an electrical fault. Resetting it repeatedly keeps a faulty, possibly wet, heater live.

Does a tripping heater mean I need a new one?

Usually not. Most trips come from the element or wiring, which are replaceable. A new heater is only needed if the tank is also leaking.

Why does it trip only after running a while?

That often points to the element or thermostat failing as they heat up, rather than a wiring fault. A technician can test both.
