The short answer
Repair the heater when a part has failed, such as the thermostat, element, safety valve or a fitting. Those repairs cost AED 150 to AED 250 with Urban Chill. Replace it when the tank body leaks or rusts, when it keeps breaking down, or when it no longer gives enough hot water. A new 50-litre heater installed is from AED 699.
When is a water heater worth repairing?
A repair is the right call when the tank is sound and a replaceable part has failed:
- No hot water because of a failed element (from AED 250) or thermostat (from AED 220)
- A dripping or faulty safety valve (from AED 180)
- A leak at a fitting or union, not the tank (from AED 150)
- A tripped thermal cut-out that resets and stays working

When should I replace my water heater?
Replacement is cheaper in the long run, and safer, when you see any of these:
- Water leaking from the tank body, seams or base
- Brown or rusty hot water, which often means the tank is corroding inside
- Two or more repairs in a year
- A household that has outgrown the tank size
- An old heater with no maintenance history

A simple rule of thumb
If the repair costs more than about half the price of a new heater, and the tank is already old, replace it. You will pay for the new heater soon anyway, usually after a leak has damaged a ceiling.
Frequently asked questions
How long does a water heater last in Dubai?
It varies with water quality, use and maintenance. An annual service, especially checking and replacing the anode rod, is the single biggest factor in making a tank last longer.
Can a leaking tank be welded or sealed?
No. A tank leak means the inner lining has corroded through. Patching a pressurised hot water tank is unsafe. Replace it.
